From the Garden
The August tomato garden is a beautiful, chaotic tangle. This year, despite giving the plants more space than ever, they've grown into giants that have quickly outpaced their supports.
One (much needed) heavy rainstorm recently tested their limits, toppling several top-heavy vines and snapping a few stems under the weight of the water and fruit. I spent much of the weekend carefully pruning back the growth and adding extra stakes where I could. It was a workout, but as I worked, I was reminded of how resilient these plants are.
I'm hopeful they'll recover, and I'm reminding myself that gardening is often about learning, adjusting, and giving things time.
This Month's Garden Highlights

Tomatoes
We have nearly 100 tomatoes growing across five varieties: Amish Paste, Chef's Orange, Honeycomb Orange Cherry, Galahad, and Mountain Man. A few are just starting to blush with color, and the anticipation for that first truly vine-ripened tomato is building every day.

The Harvest
While we wait for the tomatoes, the pole beans are flowering and the herbs are ready for drying. The flower beds are now blooming with zinnias, providing daily bouquets for the kitchen table and plenty of food for our local pollinators.
Garden Lesson
This year's biggest takeaway: tomatoes need far more support than I realized. Even the sturdiest spring cages were quickly overwhelmed by the sheer vigor of the vines. Next year will definitely include stronger cages, taller supports, or extra staking from the start to handle the summer growth spurts.
Every season teaches us something new, and thankfully the garden is always willing to give us another chance next year.

Looking Ahead
While most of our tomatoes are still green, harvest season is just around the corner. I'm already getting the kitchen ready for the big push. I can't wait to preserve this year's bounty with Homemade Salsa, Marinara Sauce, Barbecue Sauce, and even a batch of Homemade Ketchup to stock the pantry for winter.
🌿 This Month’s Reflection
Gardens have a peculiar way of humbling us. We start the spring with neat rows and careful plans, but by August, nature often has its own ideas. The much-needed rain gave the garden exactly what it had been waiting for, but it also revealed just how top-heavy my tomato plants had become. A few broken stems became another lesson learned, and they certainly haven't taken away from the joy of watching the first tomatoes begin to ripen This month reminded me that growth isn't always neat or predictable. Sometimes it spills over the edges, asks us to adapt, and rewards us with more abundance than we imagined. I can't wait to see what the coming weeks bring.
